Photography Tips
Expert advice for your perfect shot. How to prepare, what to wear, and how to pose.
Preparation & Outfits
Coordinate your outfits rather than matching them identically. Choose a cohesive color palette of 2-3 colors and mix in neutrals. Avoid large logos, distracting patterns, or neon colors that might reflect onto the skin. Layers and textures (like knits, denim, or silk) add depth to photos.
Ensure your children are well-rested and well-fed before the session. "Hangry" kids are harder to photograph! Bring their favorite snacks (non-messy ones), a drink, and perhaps a favorite toy or comfort item. We take plenty of breaks and keep the atmosphere fun and playful.
Props can add a personal touch but aren't necessary. If you have sentimental items (a family heirloom, a baby's ultrasound, a favorite book), definitely bring them! For engagement shoots, items like champagne, smoke bombs (in safe areas), or a picnic setup can make for creative shots.
Lighting & Timing
We highly recommend scheduling outdoor sessions during the "Golden Hour"—the hour just after sunrise or the hour just before sunset. This light is soft, warm, and directionally flattering, avoiding harsh midday shadows and squinting eyes.
Don't panic! Cloudy skies actually act as a giant softbox, providing beautiful, even lighting. If it's pouring rain, we can either embrace the rain/umbrellas for a cinematic "The Notebook" vibe, or we can reschedule to the next available favorable date. We monitor the weather closely.
Posing & Comfort
Most people feel this way! The trick is to focus on your partner or the activity, not the lens. We will guide you through prompts like "whisper a joke to her" or "walk towards me while holding hands" rather than stiff poses. Movement creates natural, relaxed expressions. Trust us to find your best angles.
Yes! Furry family members are welcome in outdoor shoots and (depending on the pet) studio shoots. Bring treats, a leash, and maybe a friend/handler to help hold the pet when they aren't in the photos so we can focus on just the humans for a bit too.
